Qianbaihu Hutong
This hutong (alley) follows an arc shape, starting from Xinwenhua Street in the southeast and ending at Jiguanglang Hutong in the northwest. It is 320 meters long and 6 meters wide. The area was originally located near Chongzhi Gate of the Jin Dynasty’s capital, and housed a temple dedicated to Xue Rengui. Xue Rengui was the first Protector-General of Andong, a renowned general known for his white armor and military prowess. A white stone tiger stood in front of the temple, hence the popular name “White Tiger Temple,” or simply “Baihu Temple.” During the Ming Dynasty, the area became part of Beijing’s city layout, forming a street, which was then called Baihu Temple Street. During the Qing Dynasty, the name “Baihu” evolved into “Baihu,” and two temples emerged: Qianbaihu Temple and Houbaihu Temple. This hutong is located to the south, hence the name Qianbaihu Temple. In 1965, it was renamed Qianbaihu Hutong.
