The 8 episodes are scheduled to release on May 24, \u00a02023. (At this writing, the Writers Guild <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Writers_Guild_of_America\">WGA<\/a>\u00a0are on strike, since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2023_Writers_Guild_of_America_strike\">May 2<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2023\/05\/08\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-screening-of-american-born-chinese-in-celebration-of-aanhpi-heritage-month\/\">White House<\/a>, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2hI2y6Rs3b0\">YouTube<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-hollywood-writers-strike-american-born-chinese-aea5b46704a3ba2630e1cdef1410a977\">Biden calls for \u2018fair deal\u2019 for striking Hollywood writers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gene Luen Yang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This mini series is based on Gene Luen Yang (\u6768\u8c28\u4f26 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gene_Luen_Yang\">1973<\/a>-) graphic novel of the same title that was published in 2006 by First Second Publishing house. Disney+ green-lighted this book in 2021. Yang grew up wanting to be a Disney animator.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve his two other books, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_4707-scaled.jpg\"><em>Boxers<\/em>\u00a0 and <em>Saints<\/em><\/a>, both I received as Christmas gift in 2013, published by :01 First Second. At the time, I was planning to publish a coffee table book so I wrote to him, asking about the paper he used in the book. He replied quickly, saying he didn&#8217;t really know &#8211; which wasn&#8217;t surprise &#8211; my fault to ask such dumb question.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Another cartoonist&#8217;s Disney Dream<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve attended a comic\/cartoon book release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/?p=8856\">Bill Plympton<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_4707-scaled.jpg\"><em>Make Toons That Sell without Selling Out<\/em>\u00a0<\/a> in 2012, published by Focal Press. Here is what his encounter with Disney, as I remembered it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; years ago, a Disney rep called him up and asked for an audience. When the executive arrived at his studio, all suit and tie while Bill was in his PJs, ok, not that casual but he dressed artistically casual. The dude had a fat briefcase. He sat and opened it, taking out a thick stack of papers for Bill to sign: Disney would like to hire him for a $1 million.<br \/>\nWhen he climb down from the heaven, Bill remembered casually asked, if he could work the weekend, doing stuff that he wanted to do.<br \/>\nThe rep replied, \u201cyou won\u2019t have your own stuff. It\u2019ll be owned by Disney.\u201d<br \/>\nBill was stunned. \u201cWhat about if I sketch some ideas .. \u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOwned by Disney.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhat if I had a dream ..\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOwned by Disney .. \u201d<br \/>\nAfter a month of hard reckoning, Bill turned them down.<br \/>\nHe wants to get up in the morning and feeling all pumped up to draw, and he owns it, as well as <em>his<\/em> own ideas.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Biden: an Idea<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2hI2y6Rs3b0\">I was with Xi Jinping in the Tibetan Plateau<\/a>, and he turned to me and he said, \u201cCan you define America for me?\u201d And I said, \u201cYes, I can.\u201d This is the God\u2019s truth. I said, \u201cIn one word: possibilities.\u201d Possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re the only nation in the history of the world not based on geography, ethnicity, or anything else. We\u2019re based on the i- \u2014 an idea. An idea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>America is all about IDEAS. Bill Plympton wanted to own his own ideas, so he turned down the lucrative Disney employment that perhaps everyone is or was dreaming of to obtain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A side note\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Biden hosted the screening of the <em>ABC<\/em>, to celebrate of AANHPI Heritage Month in the White House. Ke Huy Quan (\u5173\u7ee7\u5a01, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ke_Huy_Quan\">1971<\/a>-) went before Biden, to open the night. Again, I think he should reconsider his on camera conduct.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him when he went to Hong Kong to promote Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford&#8217;s Indiana Jones in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Temple_of_Doom\">1984<\/a>. He was 7 or 8 years old but was very mature and aggressive in the tv interview, like <em>I knew everything<\/em>, such a turn off.<\/p>\n<p>He then disappeared for the next few decades. Earlier this year, he won an Oscar for his role in <i>Everything Everywhere All at Once \u00a0<\/i>(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everything_Everywhere_All_at_Once\">2022<\/a>). I didn&#8217;t finish the movie, so can&#8217;t be a fair judge on his performance in this movie but he did a wonderful job in Spielberg&#8217;s film in the 1980s. I don&#8217;t know if his conduct results in the long gap in the movie business because I never read anything on him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wenxuecity.com\/myblog\/66889\/202305\/13172.html\"><strong>\u65b0\u8ff7\u4f60\u7cfb\u5217<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u6cd5\u91cc\u5fb7\u00b7\u624e\u62c9\u91cc\u4e9a (Fareed Zararia) \u5728\u62a5\u9053\u5176\u4ed6\u5185\u5bb9\u65f6\u63d0\u5230, \u62dc\u767b\u603b\u7edf\u4e3b\u6301\u4e86\u5373\u5c06\u4e0a\u6620\u7684 Disney+ \u7535\u89c6\u5267\u300a\u7f8e\u751f\u534e\u4eba\u300b\u7684\u653e\u6620. \u8fd9 8 \u96c6\u8ba1\u5212\u4e8e 2023 \u5e74 5 \u6708 24 \u65e5\u53d1\u5e03.
