As for my fading memory, I&#8217;d better write about it, for the photos&#8217; sake.<\/p>\n<p>The port city has a long history and many names, lost in translation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/magazines\/post-magazine\/article\/3103607\/why-new-york-mumbai-and-guangzhou-were-once-known-other\">214BC<\/a>, Panyu (Puny\u00fc) \u756a\u79ba<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guangzhou#Toponymy\">917-971<\/a>, Xingwang Fu \u5174\u738b\u5e9c<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonvoyage.ireneeng.com\/?p=66726\">City of the Five Rams<\/a>\u00a0or genii \u4e94\u7f8a\u57ce<\/li>\n<li>Cant\u00e3o by\u00a0Iberian merchants \u21d2 Canton<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/magazines\/post-magazine\/article\/3103607\/why-new-york-mumbai-and-guangzhou-were-once-known-other\">1918<\/a>, Guangzhou but &#8216;<em>Cantonese<\/em> lives on&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2819\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4770-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4770-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4770-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4770-48x48.jpg 48w, https:\/\/www.ireneeng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_4770-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.pnp\/stereo.1s18937\">loc<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Victoria Hotel: the two story structure was built in 1888 and was the hotel between 1895 and 1946, according to this <a href=\"https:\/\/dreamofacity.com\/2014\/06\/18\/the-victoria-hotel-canton-aka-the-guangdong-victory-hotel\/\">dream of a city<\/a> post. After the WW II and the founding of China in 1949, the hotel changed the name to Victory Hotel.
