My Genealogy Research Journey and the Road Map

Since my Mom committed suicide during the Cultural Revolution before I even began to attend school … my family history was a taboo that was too painful and risky for anybody to broach - not knowing equals less trouble - believed Dad in particular. It’s not until 2000 when my grandaunt Lucy sent her memoir did I have a chance to glimpse into my genealogical past, getting to know my illustrious forebears, as people would flatter me, lol … Most of my research was conducted at Columbia University’s Eastern library. The New York Public library, SIBL, my local library are all great resources.
The four major branches of my family are Zhang 张 Lyu 吕, Liu 刘 and Zhou 周. I also did little on the Li 李 for they have multiple marriages with my maternal and paternal sides. The time frame is primarly focus on late Qing (1840-1911) and onward. This solitary project has often taken me on a wild ride: many unexpected discoveries and kindness of others have left profound impression, enlightened me in history and humanity, therapeutic and fulfilling.
There is more researching and writing (for general audience) to be done. The paths to Li Hongzhang and Yuan Shikai are well trekked (both had multiple marriages to the Zhous and Lius, my maternal side) but the assault force for the people associated with them is small, hence making my research more difficult (but on the same token, it might be a blessing), and I have to resort to raw materials, which are available in London, Paris, Berlin, DC and of course China … You are more than welcome to join me on my exploration and any insights n suggestions, emotional or financial support are appreciated.
