I started out my family tree on Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet in 1993. It was inefficient. Then I graduated to database. The first one was abandoned (reason that had escaped me by now) and the second one crashed. By 2002, I had decent among of data, so I purchased genealogy software The Family Tree Maker (Version 11, June 23, 2003). It’s to Version 16, and then was rewritten entirely in 2008. Now it uses the year as the version indicator.
The largest genealogy record organization or church is Salt Lake City. About 10 years ago I read that it had purchased tens and thousands of Chinese genealogy records. I had the feeling that it probably couldn’t buy those records nowadays due to devalued US$ and American prestige.
As of April 2011, I moved the tree online.
