King was playing piano and I grabbed the nearest thing to read while listening. It’s the NY Times Style magazine. I actually began reading the First Man Up, by Jamie Doran and Piers Bizony, and found the following assertion amusing –probably very true since very few of us have actually gone up there:

Only those who have never traveled into orbit are in the habit of describing ‘‘the eerie silence of outer space.’’ The ship was noisy with air fans, ventilators, pumps and valves for the life-support system.
