Auntie Jennie told me about this book. In her word and that of Dabo’s as well:
胡说八道 hushuo badao – sheer nonsense and rubbish. It’s totally bogus. She gave me an example:
The nick name 张扒皮, according to the author, was due to he abused his power when he was the Viceroy of Shandong Province. But Dabo’s vision was he purchased a property that housed working girls. One day he went to check on his investment and saw few his soldiers. He was not pleased. He yelled at them .. saying ..
“I just 发饷 paid you guys’ salary and you are spending it all here? 小心我扒你们的皮 ..” .. hence the nickname 张扒皮.
Knowing how Chinese think and react, the ‘peeling your skin’ comment’s more paternal than anything, IMHO. Was he really mad? I don’t.
The book cast my great great grandfather in a negative light. I have no problem with it if it were true.
Aunt Jennie said she called the editor and the author. Editor said they’ll change and the author, initially won’t take her call, when he finally did, he told her to call back after the new year. But after the new year, the author went to Canada.
My take on this is .. I should read the book first. But IF what Aunt Jennie said is true, than the book is worthless, a mere yeshi. Where’s research – this Shiing-Shen Chern 陈省身‘s bio should be the standard to beat, at least to maintain? The author made no attempt to contact the family. Song Luxia 宋路霞 locked in many miles with her books.
I hope I can find this book too 封疆大吏(山东巡抚) .. Thanks to my QQ 团长.
