I’ve always felt that China’s current literature is cheap and this is one of them: a catchy but incorrect title – the reporter being irresponsible and the readers don’t actually read.
At first, I just laughed at the title. How can a school catching up in 100 days? But then upon reading it, did I realize that the Qinghua University had three 9-year plan and was few months shy of their second 9-year.

The first nine years 1994-2002: transition to a comprehensive research university
The second 2003-2011: advances into the world first-class University ranks
The third 2012-2020: becoming a first-class University in the world

Apparently the 100 days wasn’t part of this, not at all. They felt they accomplished first 9-year goal. With 100 or so days left, the second 9-year’s verdict is yet to be rendered. My best guess is, it will be delivered at the 100th Anniversary, on April 26.

It’s really a cheap journalism.

What’s amusing, as of now, it garnered 1360 comments on the site. The top one with the most recommendations (4882 in total to be exact) read like this:

Qinghua principal said that they will enable the University in the hundred days to advance into the world first-class? Sounded to resemble the Great Cultural Revolution to start, this level could also represent China? Disgusting nonsense [actually the author used disgusting dog fart] —

(I don’t know how prestigious this 凤凰网 ifeng is in Beijing/China, but dog fart? It’s below the belt, too uncouth.)

It appeared that this reader/author didn’t read closely, who took the title at its face value. All the most recommended comments were like this one. I was dumbfounded. How could they not read before posting a comment? Or this is the level Chinese are all at? Maybe, just maybe Thomas Friedman is over worrying ..
