What are we eating?
Bought those shrimps from my usual grocers – there are a few – in Flushing. The shrimps look overly translucent. When I opened the back to take out the long sting of the dirt, I realized there are more to it. There is something extra that I never saw before. What are they?? Fatty? Hormone growth?
I don’t know where they were raised, but it kind of gross and scary: do we know what we are eating every day? Are those shrimps generically altered? By what? Are they safe to be eaten?
In Beijing we called prawn 对虾 duixia, the large shrimps that we cooked with ginger and scallions with soy sauce. Perhaps because of its size, they do have some extra stuff on its spine (sorry I don’t know the term .. ) .. after cooking became the orange. It didn’t look scary and the body doesn’t look translucent.
Quitting chomp shrimps? Oh no, that’s hard, very hard.
