Hilarious Colloquial Cantonese狂笑的廣卅口語

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom, 中文

Cantonese expressions are just so befitting in their descriptions. It would be such a shame if they were no longer used and forgotten by the next generation.
It takes real Cantonese to understand and enjoy!

Mall is the way to go

My FOB moment. It was 1986, freshly off the boat from Hong Kong. My roommate’s boy friend came visit from Canada and took us shopping for household stuff. Fortunoff was it. It was a weekday during its famous White Sale or something, and was packed starting from the parking lots. [...]

Two China dolls conquered Dubai

.. .. With their qipaos.
My new cyberspace friend Lady Qipao (in pink on the right in this picture) has followed her husband to Dubai, set home there and started an online business: selling qipao and suits. I’ve never been to Dubai. The only times I think I visited that area was when the [...]

Yizang’s new home

Shanghai is hot. So red hot that Obama spent a day there ..
People like to joke that to non Chinese – a.k.a. foreigners, Shanghai is China but to Chinese, Shanghai is the foreign land.
Apparently Yizang couldn’t resist the calling, so he moved down there too, taking up a marketing directorship at a Swiss company.
Keep [...]

Flushing, NY 11355

It was closed by the New York City Health Department recently and was opened soon after. I passed it by on Thursday 12/17, it was business as usual.
This is the venue for our year end tennis party for the past few years. Over the years, we dined there, [...]

Kidman

Kid you not, I’m the only woman who’s obsessed with boobs. Was I born that way or am I being Americanized?
I like Nicole Kidman and thought her Chanel #5 commercial was classic (below). I really have tough time to reconcile the two pictures. Why did she have to wear something so tacky, [...]

Agent or No Agent?

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

When selling your home, do you employ an agent or DIY – do it yourself? I guess this isn’t watershed – you do what you feel like, at the moment.
The other day I saw a report indicating that one of my neighbors whose house was sold more than what they initially asked for last [...]

Pumpkin vermicelli

I recently found this pumpkin vermicelli at the local grocer in Flushing. We love it: regular cooking, in soup or with hot pot. It cooks quickly. The small individual packs are handy, no messy break ups.
Bawang Hua is from Guangdong province. What does 地理标志保护产品 mean? Geography mark protected product? Now [...]

The first snow storm of the season assaulted us last Saturday, the day we had our tennis annual fund raising party. I took the Jeep. As soon as I started the car and the wipers began to swipe, there [...]

Make up or make believe?

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

The other day I went to Sephora for some lotion and cream. It’s slow and one of the girls came over, offered to show me some make up stuff. I had few minutes to kill so I allowed it.
Man, boy, girl, it’s a huge mistake. I haven’t touch that for over a decade I don’t [...]

From 96.3 to 105.9

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

“That was the ‘Mother Goose’ Suite, music by Maurice Ravel” — slight lift and pause here — “performed by the New York Philharmonic.” The cadence was cultured, the subject matter refined. But that gravelly baritone sounded oddly out of place. Somehow it belonged to, what? Hollywood? Maybe a madcap situation comedy? “Saturday Night Live” even?
The [...]
