刘晦之  刘晦之(1879~1962年)名体智,晚号善斋老人,安徽庐江人,晚清重臣四川总督刘秉璋之子。刘秉璋在浙江巡抚任上时,正值中法战争爆发。他率军坐镇杭州。在战争的关键时刻,他对家人说:“万一战场失利,吾得对国尽忠,夫人要尽节,三个儿子(指老大刘体仁、老二刘体乾、老三刘体信)要尽孝,小四、小五尚小,送给李鸿章了。”此言一 出,军中将士无不铁心报国。中法之战镇海一役历时103天,空前酷烈,全凭浙江一省的财力和兵力支持,最终战胜法军。法军舰队司令孤拔受重伤,不久死在澎湖列岛。刘秉璋因此战获胜而擢升为四川总督。    刘晦之正是刘秉璋的“小四”,自幼聪慧好读。因刘秉璋是李鸿章的至交,两家又是姻亲,故刘晦之从小就得以进入天津李鸿章的家塾,与李氏诸子弟一起读书,中西文俱佳,又得以与李氏门生故吏及其子弟朝夕相处,过从无间,还饱览了故家旧族多年秘示人的典籍和收藏,这都为他后来从事银行业和收藏事业打下了基础。    刘晦之的文物收藏堪称海内一流,尤其是龟甲骨片和青铜器的收藏,世间罕有其比。    其甲骨文的收藏在战前就达28000余片,1953年全部出让给国家。据文物部门统计,现存我国大陆的龟甲骨片,总共9万余片,分布在95个机关单位和44位私人收藏家手里,而刘晦之的28000片,差不多就占了三分之一,是私人收藏甲骨最大的一宗。    1936年郭沫若亡命日本时,日子过得很困窘,有时连毛笔也买不起。刘晦之知其博学多才,就将自己历年所收集的龟甲骨片,请人拓出文字,集为《书契丛编》,分装成20册,托中国书店的金祖同带到日本,亲手交给郭沫若,供其研究、著书。郭沫若见后叹为观止,从中挑选了1595片,先期研读考释,并据此著成了甲骨学上具有重要意义的巨著《殷契粹编》,在日本出版。郭沫若在书序中一再感叹道:“刘氏体智所藏甲骨之多而未见,殆为海内外之冠。已尽拓出其文字,集为《书契丛编》,册凡二十,去岁夏间,蒙托金祖同君远道见示,更允其选辑若干,先行景布,如此高谊,世所罕遘。余即深受感发,不揣谫陋,取其1595片而成兹编,视诸原著虽仅略当十之一,然其精华大率已萃于是矣。”“……然此均赖刘氏搜集椎拓之力,得以幸存。余仅坐享其成者,自无待论。”(郭沫若《殷契粹编·序》)感激之情,溢于言表。    抗日战争结束后,复旦大学胡厚宣教授从大后方返回沪,即常往市区新闸路上的小校经阁拜访刘晦之先生,与之订交,参观过他的藏品,并专门安排学生们前去参观他收藏的甲骨。那是用楠木盒子规规整整分装起来的100盒甲骨。打开盒盖,满目粲然。   另有甲骨拓本《书契丛编》20册,每册后附简单释文。这套拓本,与盒内的甲骨实物先后次序正相对照。胡厚宣曾查其甲骨实数,实为28192片。著名学者陈梦家还考证过,其中有300余片为徐乃昌随庵的旧藏。    1953年,刘氏甲骨出让国家,由中央文化部文物局接收,中国科学院考古研究所将其又重新墨拓了一遍,拓本题名《善斋所藏甲骨拓本》。    对于刘氏所藏甲骨,前些年中国台湾学者董作宾不知何故,认为“刘晦之所藏甲骨号称二万片,但大者多是伪刻”(《甲骨五十年》)。解放后,中科院考古所主持甲骨学史上最权威的著录《甲骨文合集》时,认真考证过一遍,认为刘氏所捐献的甲骨中,伪刻只有112片,还不到1/250,这就不能算是“多”。董作宾还说:“他(刘氏)的精品,已选入《殷契粹编》,共1595片,真是其余不足观也已。”而事实是,郭沫若、胡厚宣在编《甲骨文合集》时,经详加考证,证明郭氏当年编的《殷契粹编》所收,固然都是精品,但精品并没有收完,如四方风名刻辞和一些特大的牛胛骨卜辞,就没有收进。    而《甲骨文合集》在编辑过程中,就从善斋拓本中又选录了不少精品,而且有的还很重要,并非“其余不足观也已”。董氏所说,不知何据?    除去甲骨和青铜器的收藏之外,小校经阁内还以藏书著名。刘氏藏书达10万册之巨。    1934年他的住宅里实在容纳不下日益增多的藏书了,只好专门造一藏书楼,取名小校经阁。他的藏书以明清精刻为主,亦不乏宋元古本。至解放时,尚有宋版9部、各地方志1000余部,善本达1928册(此为解放初上海市文管会接收时考订的结果)。这些书籍分装在500只特制的书箱里,打开书箱箱盖,上面罩了一层细细的铁丝网,这是为了在曝晒时防止老鼠钻进去而特设的。    刘氏藏书还有一个与众不同的特点,就是《四库全书》中被当时四库馆臣们删改过的书,他必须收得原来的旧本。他立志要把《四库》中“存目”之书,依目录统统收齐,收不齐就借来抄录副本。他要以一己之力,收齐《四库全书》所收书的原刻本,统统恢复旧貌,因此这小校经阁,长年雇着十几名抄书、校书的工匠,书山书海,忙得不停。    解放后,刘氏所有的藏书连同那500只箱子,全部捐给上海市文管会,后又转入上海图书馆。第一批捐书326箱,67873册;第二批捐历代碑刻拓本282种,共436册,其中有汉魏名碑50种;晋至隋79种、唐185种、宋金元明122种、杂帖36种;第三批捐书34箱。    1951年9月,还捐献了上古三代及秦汉时期的兵器130件,分装二十个箱子里,后由上海市文管会转交上海博物馆保存。为此,陈毅市长曾颁发嘉奖令,表彰他的爱国精神。    刘晦之逝于1962年,在生前已把所有藏品捐献殆尽(还有一大批古墨、古砚捐献给安徽省博物馆,该馆为之特辟“中国历代古墨陈列室”),身后不留一石一木,这在私家收藏史上,亦是为数不多的。 April 6, 2008
