John Grisham has been coined by the media as one of the best novel authors alive in the 21st century.  However, his first manuscript, A Time to Kill  was rejected by sixteen agents and twelve publishing houses before an unknown publisher agreed to publish it for a short run.  Even then it only sold a disappointing 5,000 copies.
