The Grand Dragon
Two weekends ago, a couple came to dinner and presented us this handsome percurment: a 1992 collector’s edition’s dry red from China. The English label reads Grand Dragon Cabernet Dry Red. It grew and produced in Yantai in Shandong province by Weilong. The little booklet claims that Yantai has similar soil and climate to the famed French region, hence dabbed as Chinese Bordeaux. I can’t wait to try it. To build up a litle anticipation - kiddish I know - I promised myself to save it till Golfer’s birthday. Yesterday he’s looking for a bottle to drink, asked if we should open this, then teased me that one day when he comes home from work, he’ll find an empty bottle laying on the floor :). Last year for his birthday, I got a bottle of 1966 Chateau La Lagune, Haut Médoc. It’s a Grand Cru Classe. Sublime!!
Cabernet Sauvignon, we often refer it as cabernet or cab. But I have never seen it stands alone on the lable - like it is here. And the additional info, Dry is kind of odd. Does Chinese wine have less shades than the west, like there are either red or white and either dry or sweet? On Weilong’s web, they even have Grand Dragon Chardonnay Dry Red Wine. I looked at the picture, it looks like a white, perhaps just misspelling - hopefully! The last time I had a wine made in China was five years ago. Cab translates to 解百纳 and Bordeaux 波尔多, I just learned something, a great day.
