Magnificent!
After years of procrastinating, I finally made it to our high school’s opera this past weekend, Mozart’s melodic The Marriage of Figaro. OOOMMMGGG .. OHMYGOSH! It’s so professional that for a moment I thought we were at the New York City Opera (don’t kill me, ok? with the Met’s around, I’ve never attended NYC Opera.), the vocals and acting were just unbelievably beautiful, marvelous - sorry for my poor vocabulary and command of English. Those high schoolers with loads of school work to juggling, yet they spare 3 months to prepare this full length production. Sadly to say, the 950-seat auditorium was not filled to the brim as I’d expected, given this town’s love for music. The pit players were 80% Asian, the main cast were mainly Caucasians, except Susanna, I think she’s a Filipina, very cute with a slight operatic chubby figure. Please keep in mind, this is not a musical, and is done without fund raising. Pumpkin middle school’s musical is coming this week, starting Thursday for three nights, four performance. Michael Schwartz, the conductor/producer said two performance were all the kids can handle, vocal wise. As to half filled the house, he said many people turned away when they hear this is only a high school production - WHAT a mistake! As he took the bow, he yelled out that “you’re coming back next year with 20 family members and friends..” Ok, people, empty your calendar next April, and come with me to support the kids. $10 won’t break your piggy bank, one twentieth of what Met would have cost, :) .. You might find out that you enjoy opera after all… then we can all go to the Met together, :)))
