June 4th Tiananmen

“A lot of people think Tiananmen [June 4th 1989] was all about democracy. They’re wrong.  Economics also had a big role.” ..  I couldn’t agree more.  (However the author’s assertion about “sea turtles” as Chinese “migrat back and forth across the ocean.”  Hai gui meant “overseas returned students” and is a pun for “sea turtles.”
It’s the west’s [...]

Gifting a woman

Although it was a common practice, but my great grandpa did not have a concubine or concubines, as Lucy insisted.  But he had a woman that was a gift to him from his subordinates while he’s working in Suiyuan 绥远 - Hohhot, Inner Mogolia alone.  He usually uprooted his family for new post around the country, but when the [...]

This old house - Tangfang Hutong 糖房胡同

Before 1942.  From L to R: chauffeur Lao Xing 老邢, a maid, my great grandma, grandaunt Lucy, great grandpa, Sun Baichuan 孙百川 and Xiao Sanye 小三爷.
This European villa was on Tangfang hutong in Xuanwu Men - Martial Announcement Gate, near the Catholic church Nantang (Xuanwumen is located on the southern wall’s western section).  Jiujiu, Mom and Xiaoyi were all [...]

Danielle Steel’s a concubine!

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

I struck up a conversation with a fellow swimmer who was holding His Bright Light by Danielle Steel in the locker room.  She went on passionately briefing me about the book, then adding that ..
“I’m not sure how but he died.. .. bipolar..”  (Checking on the Amazon review, he committed suicide.)
“Oh .. .. so young?  .. Is this her [...]

Sampras-Federer comes true

Published by The Kibbitzer under Sports

Save the date: March 10th.  The two would play the second time, the venue is the Garden and Lendl is promoting it.  But wait a second, can Pete at 36 actually compete with Roger who’s only 26?  I thought Roger forcing or hastening Pete’s decision to retire after their only match at Wimbledon in 2001, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 and 7-5.  They’ve played three exhibition [...]

He said .. she said ..

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

He said . . . I don’t know why you wear a bra;  you’ve got nothing to put in it.
She said . . . You wear pants don’t you?
He said . . ….. Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
She said .. . That’s a good idea - you stand by the ironing board while I sit [...]

70% of the vote

Published by The Kibbitzer under Current Affairs

Putin hand-picked puppy Dmitry Medvedev had nearly 70% of vote.  They both showed up unexpectedly last night at a rock concert, fully clothed (auuuuuu??) in black casual jackets.  Not many such dramatic victory in the G-7, sorry now G-8.  The recent landslide elections perhaps were Reagan and Bloomberg, both were 2nd term: tested and proven.

US defence contract gone to Europe

Published by The Kibbitzer under Current Affairs

Instead the Boeing, the EADS - the European defence group gets the $35bn to supply refueling tankers to the American air force.  I’m dumbfounded.  US bidders were too expensive, or to show the world that the Americans aren’t protectionism or went for the cheaper price?  When Japaneses opposing the US beef import, they claim the Jap’s intestines were [...]

Father Clings to Life After Brutal Killings

Published by The Kibbitzer under View from Bottom

My lord, what’s going on here?  The parents demanded the break up, their angry daughter, the b/f and two others ambushed the family, killing mom and two younger brothers.  Is the girl mentally ill, or retard??  What did parents fail to do to bring up their daughter right?
