1984-05-01, Fu’s younger daughter Yuan and husband
Aunt Fu was one of my mom’s best friends. I was pretty close with her younger daughter Yuan. The older sis is, well too old for me, :). Whenever our family got together, which was often, Yuan would play with me. Either the sister are older or they lived in the heart of city, the thing they played and talked were drastically different.
After mom’s suicide, her family remained close with Yeye and Nainai - YN took them as their own. They would come to play cards with YN on weekends and keep a running record, tally it up at the Chinese New Year. Yeye termed up with Auntie Fu and Nainai with Uncle Guo. For a while we all wished that Yuan would married Xiao Jin, cousin Don’s older brother. Yeye was the match maker and eager supporter. Whenever Jin or Yuan came visit, he would pumped them for info or progress details/reports.
Yuan is good few years older than I’m, so she missed out on schools (her parents were teachers). But she’s pretty and very able with house chords. It’s quite a shocker when she dumped Jin after a year or so. They both quickly found their love and married: he to Don’s ex and she to the fellow in the pic, who’s graduated from Qinghua. (I tried to fix Yishi with Don, but didn’t work either, he thought she’s too young.) I was too close to both to ask why, but Nainai said Yuan felt Jin was too boring and slow. On paper, her new b/f was a head and shoulder above, a Qinghua degree means a lot. And many would agree he’s better looking than Jin. But deep down, we all felt Jin who’s tall and dashing is a nicer person. I really thought they’re made for each other. But guess life making different turns for us.
Last time in Beijing getting together, Yuan looks pretty, unchanged. Her son was attending Renda fu, obviously very smart and bright. But she’s divorced - she said she didn’t want to talk about him. From time to time, Jin would call her - that’s how I got in touch with her! It’s quite heart broken that we said very little to each other - we give up on keeping up with each other, :(. The whisper I heard was that he had mistress and moved on.
For whatever the reason, Auntie Fu cut her tie with Yeye and Nainai for the last few years. I visited them every time I was in Beijing but she didn’t bother to explain. Xiao Yi thought I was making an unnecessary move. .. for old time sake?
