The pomelo 柚子
Some call it Chinese grapefruit. Not far from the truth, especially now they have even matched pinky color of grapefruit. English translates gan 甘 as sweet which in most cases are correct, but it omits some elements, not just sweet, the gan as dry and gan as sugary. Gan is the most appropriated word to describe the pomelo, both in texture and taste. I’ll compare pomelo to a young girl when everything is tight - body and knowledge, you’ll have to squeeze her hard for juice or info (maybe shy too), where grapefruit is a mature woman, body starts to give and she’s not shy any more, can converse easily and has lots to say. In the not too distant past, the white pomelo was really dry at first bite and has hint of bitterness to it (great!!), vs now the juice is kind of flowing like grapefruit. Oh well ..
