Top colleges show record rejection rate

FT …’Harvard admitted a meagre 9 per cent of its record 22,955 applications this year - its lowest acceptance rate ever.’…. ‘A year at Harvard costs close to $46,000, while the average tuition at four-year public colleges and universities is $6,000.’ …. and an admissions counsellor thinks ‘that 17- and 18-year-olds today have accomplished more,” she [...]

Yoga

Tina Z gave me a free trial certificate from her yoga place.  I had options of going for a week or getting an hour of private session.  I opted for the 1 hr.  The yoga place is a chain - this location is very small, perhaps only about 1,000 sq ft, a reception area where all the [...]

谢谢大驾光临。这个网站是有关我的家谱,股市买卖以及没人过问的琐事。第一和第二是为了督促自己,第三项是为了不招人讨厌,免得强迫他人听我唠叨鸡毛蒜皮的事。

Putting my stamp on history

The First Encounter
Soon after moving to Hong Kong from Beijing in the late 70s, I spotted a newspaper ad for a stamp convention. Intrigued by the notion that my idle hobby could possibly merit any kind of gathering, I decided to stop by in the hopes of meeting fellow teenagers who shared my interest in [...]

Full Month Party 满月酒

Manyue jiu, full month party for the new born is a celebration Chinese dotted on their children, well, in lieu of bat or bar mitzvahs, or Sweet 16, etc.  lol…  Some people call it red egg party too.  We had it for Kinglazy in a seafood restaurant and Slowpoke at Grandma’s.  Don’t accuse me of 重男轻女, [...]

Martin the coach

Martin hustles.  It’s last year this time when I met him as kids took the week long spring break lessons at the sport center in town.  He taught Kinglazy’s group.  On the last day, he came out during one of the water breaks, and said to me, “oh, your son can play.”  Pardon me?  I [...]

Of Human Bondage

Published by The Kibbitzer under Kith and Kin

Elaine is my cousin I met thro my research.  She lives in Honolulu with her hubby n three grown kids; perhaps is the only one who’s interested in our genealogy.  Not long after we began corresponding back in 2004, she excitedly told me that she found a bond that signed by our great great grandfather: [...]

Simon says

Slowpoke met some of my buddies for the first time, those I never invited for dinner at home.  Her impression of Simon is ‘a very jolly man’.  He talks non stop, providing advice freely and abundantly, which I enjoy.  Sandy is ’smile a lot, very friendly.’  When Sandy learned Slowpoke’s name, she said ‘oh, that’s [...]

A contemporary composer

We went to an amateur concert with Lee and Frank in Port Washington.  It’s in the memory of Ouida Mintz who wrote a book recounting her friendship with Bernstein.  Among dozen performers, there was this blonde young composer Jane Leslie who played her own pieces, Dreamsong was written in 1992 and Joy was from last [...]

Spa

Spa, yoga and thousand years old eggs are in fashion recent few years.  Ok, the egg is a joke, but you got the idea.  Rita called last night, informing me we’re going to Jialing’s new spa opening today.
The 6,000 sq ft bi-level salon is airy and obviously new, but nothing to write home about, [...]
