The First Woman to Antarctic

Edith Maslin “Jackie” Ronne (1919-2009), was an American (and the wife of Captain Finn Ronne). She was the first woman to set foot on Antarctic and to spend a year there. She was 27 when she landed at Stonington Island on March 12, 1947.  This record stood for 22 years. With her was another woman, wife of an expedition pilot.

Stonington Island was the East Base of the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) Expedition (1939–41).

It was named after Stonington, Connecticut, (which we visited in 2021) the home of Captain Nathaniel Palmer (1799-1877), who sailed on his sloop 单桅帆船 Hero, and saw the Antarctic continent in 1820.

A brief bio of Finn Ronne: born in Horten, Norway in 1899, and immigrated to US in 1923, gaining the citizenship six years later. His father was a polar explorer who served in Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) expedition to the South Pole, which was a success. Once in US, Finn Ronne went on two of American navel officer Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) expeditions to the South Pole. With support of the American Geographical Society, Ronne went to Antarctica in the 1940’s, after serving few years in the U S Navy.
